King County Sheriff's Office SkillBridge Program

The King County Sheriff’s Office is proud to offer a SkillBridge opportunity for service members who have honorably served our country and are seeking to continue their commitment to public service by protecting and serving the communities of King County and our partner cities.

The SkillBridge program is available to service members within 60–180 days of their separation from active-duty service. Through this program, participants will complete the King County Sheriff’s Office Pre-BLEA (Basic Law Enforcement Academy), attend the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA), and transition into a sworn Deputy Sheriff position upon successful graduation from BLEA.

Service members are advised to apply at least a year before their Expiration of Term of Service (ETS) date.

King County Sheriff's Office Training Program

The SkillBridge training program is open to service members authorized for 60–180 days of participation. The exact duration is determined by each military branch and may vary based on rank and command approval.

The King County Sheriff’s Office training program consists of three phases:

  • Approximately 6 weeks of in-house Pre-Basic Law Enforcement Academy(BLEA)
  • The 20-week Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy
  • Approximately 7 weeks of in-house Post-BLEA training.
  • King County Sheriff’s Office SkillBridge Eligibility
  • Service members must have 180 days or fewer remaining on active-duty prior to their discharge date and have completed at least 180 days of continuous active-duty service
  • Must be separating with an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions
  • Must obtain approval from their unit commander and complete all required SkillBridge documentation (approval is subject to mission requirements)
  • Must complete a Department of Defense–approved ethics briefing and a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) or Transition Readiness Seminar (TRS)
  • Must coordinate out-processing requirements and any planned terminal leave 
 

King County Sheriff’s Office Application

  • Complete the King County Sheriff’s Office SkillBridge registration form

  • Provide proof of chain of command approval, ethics briefing completion, and planned out-processing/terminal leave dates (if applicable)

  • Take and pass the Public Safety Test (written and physical) and complete the Personal History Statement

  • Submit an application through GovernmentJobs.com

  • Successfully pass the oral board interview

     

  • Complete and pass a full background investigation

     

  • Successfully complete a commander’s interview, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and medical exam

     

Upon successful completion of the hiring process, selected candidates will receive a start date aligned with the beginning of the approved SkillBridge period and will begin training accordingly.
